New College Grads Frequently Asked Questions

Why Construction?

Construction is an industry in which every day we get up in the morning and look forward to building the future – literally and figuratively. Each day we build something tangible. We take pride in looking forward to future challenges and looking back on successful efforts from the past.

In the construction industry, you will be part of refining the design, planning the work, and building the project. It’s a great feeling to help build something that will last for decades and know you put your heart and best efforts into its creation. Once you’ve been to your first ribbon-cutting, you will know you’ve chosen the right career.

Will I be able to use my engineering or technical degree?

Yes; definitely! Every day at Helm, you will use the skills you learned in school along with relationship-building and financial management skills to build something new. For employees eligible to get their Registered Professional Engineers license, we encourage you to do so and the company will pay for the extra classes and study guides you will need. There’s something unique about being a contractor and having PE after your name on your business card; it sets you apart in job meetings and project interviews and drives additional respect. It’s something to be proud of and we strongly support employees who wish to achieve that status.

What does my career path look like?

We invite you to take a look at our Career Path Road Map. Most recent college graduates start on one of these three paths, and it is common to move between paths as your career progresses. Current Helm employees are aware that we take personal and professional development seriously and all individuals in leadership positions at Helm are prepared to help you succeed in the short, medium and long terms both professionally and personally.

Career Stories

“Leadership here gives us a lot of rope. When we earn trust, it’s given to us. Is this a challenging place to work? Yes. Is it a rewarding place to work? Absolutely. The company has a sterling reputation in the eyes of customers and owners and I can tell you many people in our business are envious of those of us who work at Helm.”
Jeff Knoup, Vice President, Freeport Office

“I interned here at Helm and had a feeling I’d be back. What I learned in the field those two summers was invaluable – and so was my confidence that Helm is a place I could come home to after school. I graduated from Iowa State in 2018 and came straight back to Helm. People share information here so easily – it’s a great place to hone your skills every day.”
Jake Dumler, Project Engineer, Westmont, IL Office

“I’ve been here a long time and I’ve seen a lot of growth in our company and our team. I myself have grown – honestly, we all have. The dynamic of this being a very well run family company is always on display here. The Helm family demands hard effort, but it rewards it and supports it in so many ways. If you want to be great, not just good, in one of Helm’s disciplines – this is the place for you.”
Jeff McCoy, President Helm Service

“I chose to work at Helm because of the company’s culture. Everyone supports each other and understands that it’s a team-focused company. It’s a great place to learn new skills, especially so early on in my career. Shortly after I graduated college, I was given many leadership opportunities that served as great experiences that have assisted in my day-to-day activities. You don’t get those kinds of opportunities at many companies in this industry.”
Kevin Waller, Project Engineer, Helm Mechanical

“I would say that I know a lot about the really big companies in this industry. Not that Helm is small, because we are not – I’m talking about the really big players. They don’t have the same atmosphere. They are not as supportive or caring as Helm is. They don’t feel like family. Here, everyone wants to  help. Everyone is a mentor. The CEO’s door is always open and I will tell you if you haven’t experienced that sort of access to leadership – it means a lot. It feels like family and I am very, very proud to be on this team.”
Pattie Krippendorf, Helm Service Vice President
